The mission of the Firehouse (Society for the Development of Arts and Humanities) is to advance the arts and humanities in the Greater Newburyport region by:
The Firehouse Center for the Art is a 195-seat intimate theater on the waterfront of beautiful downtown historical Newburyport. This vibrant cultural center offers national, regional and local live performances at affordable prices. Additionally, we are proud of our family and senior programming.
We believe the Firehouse is one of the best assets our community has to offer!
1991 heralded the Gala Opening of the Firehouse Center. Over the past twenty years, the Firehouse Center has been a hallmark of local culture and arts, drawing patrons from the local communities as well as a large tourist crowd in the spring, summer and fall. Programming is broad-based, and includes dance, music, theater, an art gallery, and a school show series.
Just think about the shows we were able to produce last season: Boxed In, by Stephen Faria. Forbidden Newburyport, written and directed by Suzanne
Bryan. The New Works Festival. Each showcased exceptional writing, directing, acting, and set design by our local friends and neighbors. With talent like this in greater Newburyport, “community theater” is not a term that implies amateur hour. Instead, it’s the highest accolade possible.
