February 3- March 21, 2010
Elizabeth Harty is a painter, who works in acrylic and
mixed media, incorporating the technique of collage. She also uses this technique as a printmaker with the collagraph and monotype. Harty allows the printmaking, painting and sculpture to influence each other. Her inspiration comes from many places: nature, people, dance, music, textiles, costumes and calligraphy from various parts of the world. "Working in an abstract or impressionistic style allows me the freedom to experiment with these relationships until I am satisfied with my creation," says Harty.
Harty received her BFA from the University of Maryland and studied at Maryland Institute of
Art and The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
She enjoys exploring the relationships of texture, color, shape and line.
Artist's Statement: This body of work celebrates my love of color, texture and calligraphy. These mixed
media, acrylic paintings were inspired by my passion for printmaking, particularly the monotype and collagraph. Recently I moved from Maryland to Cape Ann where I spent summers years ago. I felt
called back to the ocean. The Lantern became a metaphor for my journey north symbolizing a guiding light, hope and courage and a beacon shining on a new path. Like the lighthouse a maritime symbol leading ships to a safe harbor, the light helped
me navigate my way back to the ocean and a new life.
This show includes The Lantern series. These paintings are based on abstracted images inspired by lanterns using color to evoke light. The light expresses a connection to the mystical and contemplative. It celebrates, it rejuvenates and it is ceremonial. I use collage, printmaking, calligraphy and other mark making techniques to manipulate
the surface color and texture.
