September 17-18, 2010
Artist Reception: Sat, September 18, 4 -6pm
Back when life was simpler and there was a lovely garden full of trees and fruit and animals, there was Adam. And there was Eve. Artist George Wingate has created paintings that are lovely in their simplicity and charming in the manner in which they portray some of the unexpressed thoughts that Adam and Eve might have had all those years ago as they were first discovering their world... and each other.
Wingate's work, a heady convergence of innocence and deep philosophical thought, will hang in the upstairs gallery at the Firehouse for two nights only and represents a perfect companion piece to the staged reading of Mark Twain's "The Diaries of Adam and Eve"(adapted and edited by David Birney). We hope you will come and enjoy a very special evening at the Firehouse as the fine arts and the theater arts join forces!
The Adam and Eve imagery emerged from a need to provide work for a small exhibition in South Hamilton, MA., in 2009. I produced what I thought would be an entertaining and meaningful exhibition. I drew upon years of figure studies and painting and looked both within and without...for inspiration. I thought that I was drawing water from an aesthetic puddle in my driveway and have been surprised and energized that that puddle has turned out to be a deep well. I have been painting and exploring the Adam and Eve theme ever since. The exhibition was well received. The work resonated. I have been testing its depth and finding that there is no end to what can be said by and about the first duo. What is being said? The Adam and Eve imagery should speak for themselves. There are intimations that they speak for all of us.
George Wingate has taught at Gordon College (Wenham, MA) and Parsons School of Design (NY, New York). His work has been exhibited nationally and in Europe, and several of the Adam and Eve pieces will be included in an exhibition scheduled to open in Geneva, Switzerland, in October of this year.
George Wingate's "Of A Time When Everything Worked: Adam & Eve" is produced by the Firehouse.
