Artist Reception: Saturday, July 25, 5:30-7:30pm
Karen Jones received her training at the Museum of Fine Arts School, Boston and the Art Institute of Boston, Kenmore Square. Her work consists of both pastels and acrylics and is represented by Kennedy Studios, Porstsmouth, NH; and Boothbay Harbor Gallery, ME. An active member of the Newburyport Art Assn, Concord Art Assn and Marblehead Art Assoc. Jones is also currently teaching pastel classes in the NAA and CAA.
I come from a family of artists who expressed their talents in different ways. My great-grandfather emigrated from Germany, settled in Brooklyn, NY and was employed as an architect on the design of the Chas. Schwab mansion on Riverside Drive, NYC. My grandfather was an illustrator for a large department store in Manhattan; my father, a photoengraver before the printing process
changed over to the more technological form of lithography. Painting is my passion.
I attempt to create serene, contemplative landscapes where one can be alone in a natural, beautiful setting.
I enjoy working with pastels because of their unique ability to create soft, dreamy images; and acrylics for their saturation and brilliance that can create the darkest of shadows and the lightest of highlights -the blue or yellow of the sky, the terra cotta and burnt sienna of the ground and turquoise in dark shadows is a combination that I’m very drawn to for the vibrancy of color and strong emotive light. When I moved to the north shore of Boston where there are many salt marshes along the coast, I found an area rich in natural beauty where the change of light and seasons provides infinite inspiration.
