Shooting Beauty:
Photographs from "The Picture This Photography Project"

September 2 to October 11, 2009

Come view a world rarely glimpsed by most, although it is right before our eyes. In this exhibit of photographs, a hidden and sometimes shocking world is revealed to us -- the world around us as experienced by individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities that leave individuals with an inability to control motor functions of the body . A program called "The Picture This Photography Workshop," made photography accessible to participants who range in age from 25 to 65 and have varying degrees of mobility.  Most are in wheelchairs.  Many can move little more than their necks.  Some can speak, but many communicate via their "speech boards," a simple printout of the alphabet. The project's founder, Courtney Bent, adapted cameras with special systems that enable this unique form of communication to be brought to people whose voices we usually don't hear often enough, or loudly enough.  A picture is worth a thousand words and a thousand words to someone with cerebral palsy is a luxury in their otherwise non-verbal world.

In addition to the exhibit, the documentary film Shooting Beauty (directed and edited by George Kachadorian), which tells the story of this photography project will be shown Friday, September 25, at 8pm (also at the Firehouse) as part of the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival.
