Tracy Bickel:
collage artist, painter, writer, actor

December 4th – Mar 1
Artist Reception: Saturday, December 13, 5–7pm

Artist Statement

It all starts with emotion. My work represents an experience of a time, a place, a mood. My pieces are translations – made from found materials a stone or a cracked tile or garbage from a Harlem street corner. I use acrylics and plaster and other textures to blend the elements with color, tending toward vibrant primary colors like cobalt blue to create a richness beyond words.

My tools are varied and whatever is at hand to help put the elements to paper or wood – a putty knife, a brush a ruler, a bare hand at times. I work in the “whatever it takes mode” to plot a path of an image in my psyche to an image on a flatter dimension. There is a repetitive theme to my work, patterns and line and dots – sometimes chaos, sometimes calm. People are either overwhelmed or soothed and I enjoy watching the effect of the art on them and watching them convey their feelings as a reaction.

My best moments in any form of creativity is when I’ve lost myself in the moment and I reach a zone forgetting about everything else but my current task. Sometimes my work is not complete and it sits for a long time, waiting for my cycle, waiting for another experience to bring it to closure.

Artist Information

Tracy’s creativity is expressed in many forms, always with texture and color and the rare beauty of a free spirit. Tracy is a graduate of Texas Women’s University and works as a Creative Recruiter in the advertising and marketing field. After spending many years in New York, writing and performing for stage, Tracy moved to Newburyport five years ago.

Living in Newburyport opens new doors for Tracy’s creativity. She works out of her art studio and is an active member of the area’s theatre community. Belonging to this passionate and tight community of seacoast artists allows Tracy to explore and stretch her creative spirit with the rich camaraderie of her peers.
