The North Shore Dance Alliance will present its eighth annual concert of contemporary dance showcasing current work by a range of North Shore choreographers and companies. The North Shore Dance Alliance is an organization dedicated to encouraging dance on the North Shore of Massachusetts.
Featured in this year's concert are four dances created around the theme of memory. Ghost Train, by Janet Taisey Craft for the Ipswich Moving Company (of Ipswich), is about returning to a place 25 years later and experiencing the changes brought about by time, both in the place and in the observer. Set to original music by Richard Bennett, the dance uses text from the travel writer, Paul Theroux.
Yesterday, a solo created by Irada Djelassi of BoSoma Dance Company (of Peabody), explores the individual's sense of transformation within the flow of time. How do we make sense out of yesterday, today and tomorrow, out of our multiple selves?
And finally, two choreographers have developed works reflecting on their mothers. Allez, by Betsy Katz for Gravity (of Danvers), depicts a mother's search for her own identity, accompanied by her three sisters, while Love, by Chreyl Fisher-Schwind for Exit Dance Theatre (of Newburyport), is a lighthearted celebration of affection.
Other dances in the concert include Bubble of Debris, an experimental duet by Jenny Carlson (of Ipswich) and Julie Pike Edmond (of Salisbury), which incorporates plaster body casts; Lux Aeterna, a dramatic, lyrical evocation of the supporting relationships which see us through hard times, by Sallee Slagle for Forty Steps Dance (of Nahant); I Insist, an abstract solo playing against the constant rhythms of Zoe Keating's music, created by Ivan Korn for the North Shore Civic Ballet (of Marblehead); and Relentless, a contemporary jazz quintet by Adrienne Mincz for Five Flights Up (of Ipswich), set to music by Ashley MacIsaac.
The North Shore Dance Alliance, founded in 2001 and directed by Mary Lee Karlins, is a grass roots organization dedicated to supporting and promoting dance on the North Shore. The group is open to dancers, choreographers, teachers and dance interested individuals.
This event is presented by North Shore Dance Alliance.
