A Road Unpaved is a short 30-minute documentary by film makers Taylor Roberts and David Fitzgerald who traveled to Nicaragua on three separate occasions to document what life living with a physical disability is like in an underdeveloped country.
A life with disability is never easy but those difficulties become magnified in a developing country. With no access ramps, no curb cuts in sidewalks, mobility in this second poorest country in the western hemisphere is severely restricted and a small task such as going to the grocery store becomes nearly impossible for one who is wheel-chair bound.
Roberts and Fitzgerald explore what is perhaps the biggest obstacle of all however -- the social stigma and discrimination felt by disabled individuals. This is an unflinching look at the despair that comes from being marginalized by a society.
About the filmmakers. Taylor and David are both senior Film, Video, & Interactive Media majors at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. They are both in their final semester at Quinnipiac and intend to pursue documentary film work upon graduation.
