The Favorite Poem Project was started by former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky to encourage people to share their favorite poems with others and appreciate the wonders of poetry. To culminate the Newburyport Literary Festival, Newburyport High School Creative Writing students have organized the Eleventh Annual Greater Newburyport Favorite Poem Project. After calling on everyone in the community to submit a favorite poem, students have selected a wide range to be read at the Newburyport Firehouse Center for the Arts on April 28, 2013 at 3:00 pm, each one read by the person who chose it.
Included in this year’s readers are a Newburyport City Councilor, a Newburyport School Committee member, a six-year old first grader, a smattering of teenagers, and a special poem presented by Boston Camerata Director, Anne Azéma, among others. Poems will be read in French, Chinese, Greek, and German, as well as English.
This annual event has become a much loved tradition in Newburyport, as we celebrate the diversity of people in our community through the poems they love.
The Poem Project is part of the Newburyport Literary Festival.
This event is free and open to the public.
