Churchill Downs with a view of the Merrimac

PRESS RELEASE:
March 21, 2010

Want to put the thoughts of winter away for another year?  There’s no better way to kick-start the Spring/Summer season than by entering a horse in the Kentucky Derby. No horse at home?  Short on oats?   Kids too grown to be jockeys?  No worries.  For the sixth year, the Firehouse will be showing “the-most-exciting-two-minutes-in-sports” live on the big screen.  And anyone can get in the true spirit of the big event with the live betting, hat-judging contest, and mint juleps on offer at the Firehouse during the Sixth Annual Kentucky Derby Party.

The Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday, May 1 from 4-8PM at the Firehouse Center for the Arts (Market Square, Newburyport, MA) represents the largest annual fundraising event for the arts center and there is no better way, certainly no more entertaining way, to support the arts in your community. Tickets are $65 per person and may be purchased at the Box Office, by calling 978/462-7336 or online at www.firehouse.org.  Guests will start the afternoon with a Red Carpet Event sponsored by the Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation, Inc. that includes the carpet, flashing cameras powered by Greg Nikas Photography to capture you in your Derby finery with a keepsake photo, and a complimentary mint julep.  All in all, a welcome so warm you’ll swear you were in your ol’ Kentucky home.  Also included in the donation amount are delicious hors d’oeuvres, big-screen simulcast of the Kentucky Derby, great prizes for the most fashionable & bizarre hats, live-betting and cash bar, live auction, silent auction of works by local artists, and eligibility for $750 cash drawing at the end of the evening.

To really get the most out of Derby Day and to “take ownership” of  your winning horse, why not sign up for Geoffrey Mullis’s weekly updates on the field of horses?  Being a good Brit, Geoffrey is a lover of all things “horse” and we are fortunate that he and his wife took up residence in Amesbury:  the Queen’s loss, our gain!  By carefully following all of the qualifying races Geoffrey becomes acquainted with the horses , the trainers, and the jockeys and can tell you if your favorite likes mud, prefers a sunny day and a fast track, or would rather be put out to stud.  You might be the big winner come Derby Day…or at the very least you’ll impress your friends with your new-found knowledge of the turf.  E-mail Geoffrey Mullis at to be included in the updates.

Can’t wait until May 1 to support the arts?  Join corporate Derby Party Signature sponsors Institution for Savings and Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank in keeping the arts alive in our community. Additional corporate Sponsorship Opportunities are still available and the 2010 Derby Committee is now accepting donations for the auction as well.  For more information please contact Derby Chairperson Kathleen Isbell (978/255-2661) and you may also visit the web site at www.firehouse.org.
