Synopsis of Play:
"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…" And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero…and his name is Shrek. Irreverently fun for the whole family, “Shrek” proves that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre
Actors should arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your audition time and come prepared with a copy of your headshot (these will not be returned). An accompanist will be provided. Please bring your music in a hard-backed binder clearly marked. No music from vocal only librettos, lead sheets, or "easy piano" books will be accepted. The pianist will not be expected to transpose. Time permitting there may be a dance call, so please come prepared with a change of dance appropriate clothing and shoes. Actors should prepare 2 brief contrasting songs (roughly 16-32 bars each) in the musical style of the show, not to exceed 2 minutes total. Actors are welcome but not required to include a song from the show in their audition package. Please be familiar with the show.
Seeking to cast:
SHREK (20s/30s; high baritone): The unlikely hero of our story—a big, green, terrifying ogre who lives alone in a swamp. Imposing, a bit prickly, capable of edgy humor but also surprising gentleness.
PRINCESS FIONA (20s/30s; soprano mix belt): Not your ordinary fairytale princess. Quirky, sharp-witted, strong-willed, with great comedic skills.
DONKEY (20s/30s; baritenor): Shrek’s optimistic and loyal sidekick. Easily frightened, sometimes pushy, a chatterbox with a big heart who will always have your back.
LORD FARQUAAD (20s-40s; baritenor): Short, ruthless and self-absorbed ruler of Duloc. Role requires some physical agility and strong knees.
ENSEMBLE: 14-16 strong, energetic and versatile singer/actor/dancer/puppeteers to play a variety of kings, queens, ogres, guards, knights, dwarfs, and familiar fairytale characters, including:
- PINOCCHIO—leader of the Fairytale Characters (may be played by male or female)
- GINGY/ SUGAR PLUM FAIRY — mezzo belt, requires puppet work
- THE DRAGON — requires rich, high powerhouse belt
- YOUNG FIONA (7-10 years old) and TEEN FIONA (teens) must be strong solo singers
- LITTLE OGRE (7-10 years old) Shrek as a young ogre starting out in the world
