The Firehouse’s first annual Call for Mural Artists is now open! The 2019 round of proposals is for one temporary mural, to be on display from June 19 – July 14 2019. Submissions are being accepted from 15 September – 30 November 2018.
The theme for the 2019 Mural Contest is “The Colors of Newburyport”. Artists are free to interpret the theme in any way they feel is relevant. The mural wall is approximately 13 linear feet of 10’ high gallery wall space, located on the ground floor of the Firehouse Center for the Arts (see Gallery Specifications). The wall will be faced with a removable material (wood panel, canvas, etc. – to be discussed with the selected artist) so the mural can be preserved following the exhibition. The selected artist will receive a $500 stipend, and reimbursement for materials up to $150. The remaining walls in the gallery can be used to display other original work for sale for the duration of the exhibition.
An artist proposal consists of:
- Artist Submission Form (found online HERE)
- Biographical summary or resume/CV
- Artist statement
- Representation of the proposed mural (sketches, photos, concept art, etc.)
- Cost estimate for materials and supplies
- and a $15 entry fee (Payable online HERE or by check, made out to The Firehouse Center for the Arts. Mail to: Firehouse Center for the Arts, attn: Gallery Director. One Market Square, Newburyport MA 01950).
About the space:
The Firehouse Box Office is in one end of the Gallery and there is access to Sea Level Oyster Bar, the restaurant that shares our building, at the other end. Audiences for Firehouse’s theatrical events pass through the Gallery to the stairs leading up to the second-floor theater lobby. There is public access through the Gallery during Box Office open hours, Wednesday-Sunday, 12-5 PM (or until curtain on performance nights). Additionally, Newburyport hosts four ArtWalk events each year when many local galleries, including that of the Firehouse, open their doors for extended hours and feature special gallery activities. The timeframe of this mural aligns with an ArtWalk date (June 22, 2019) which provides an opportunity for the selected artist (perhaps a live painting demo, or a reception for the show, etc.). On top of our own shows, the Firehouse is host to and a venue for many regional and local events which bring more visitors through our Gallery, enhancing the opportunities and the exposure of the artists’ work.
