The Call for Artists (2016) is now open! The 2016 round of proposals is for 12 monthly one-person shows from October 2016 – September 2017. Submissions are being accepted from March 15 – April 30, 2016.
A Visual Arts Review Board (composed of Firehouse Board members, professional artists, photographers, gallery directors) will conduct a blind review of all submitted proposals in May. The Review Board seeks bodies of work that can produce aesthetically coherent one-person shows in our gallery space and more broadly a rich 12-month Gallery Program offering a variety of mediums and styles. In early June all participating artists are notified as to whether/not their proposals have been selected and the scheduling of accepted artists begins. The finalized 12-month exhibit schedule is announced by the end of June.
An artist proposal consists of: Artist Submission Form; biographical summary or resume/CV; artist statement; 10-20 high-res jpeg images; Image List; and a $25 entry fee. See the downloadable Artist Submission Form for full details and instructions. Due to the Gallery’s configuration, only 2D artwork can be exhibited. All submissions are by hard-copy and mailed/hand-delivered to the Firehouse.
There are approximately 50 linear feet of 10’ high gallery wall space located on the ground floor of the Firehouse Center for the Arts (see Gallery Specifications). The Firehouse Box Office is located in one end of the Gallery and there is access to the restaurant at the other end. Audiences for Firehouse’s theatrical events pass through the Gallery to the stairs leading up to the second floor theater lobby. There is public access through the Gallery during Box Office open hours, Wednesday-Sunday, 12-5 PM and later on performance days.
Newburyport ArtWalk sponsors 4 ArtWalk events each year when 15 galleries, including that of the Firehouse, feature special gallery activities. In addition, Firehouse is host to and a venue for many regional and Newburyport events which bring more visitors through our Gallery, enhancing the opportunities and the exposure of the artists’ work. Artists’ receptions are the responsibility of the artist (see Gallery and Exhibit Information).
